U.K.-based artist Lucy Owen became enthralled with Juggalos (you know, the clown-makeup-wearing fans of rappers Insane Clown Posse — duh) after stumbling on a post on an online message board. She started exploring Juggalo subject matter with her artwork, but soon realized her art would suffer unless she traveled to Detroit for firsthand experience.

“Ultimately, it got to the point where I was tired of trying to explain what a Juggalo is (from a totally unqualified position),” she says in a press release. “Being here, you can really see where ICP’s macabre humor and imaginative escapism comes from.”

She first came to Detroit in 2014 as part of a series of artist’s residencies at Popps Packing in Hamtramck and the other at Fortress Studios in Detroit. She also managed to make the pilgrimage to the Gathering of the Juggalos in Ohio. (The press release also says she has tried every flavor of Faygo.)

She exhibited her first series of painting, Where the Juggalos Roam, in 2014. This year, she returns with Beautiful (Indestructible) Women of the Juggalo World (another way of saying “Juggalette”), which opens at Detroit’s Start Gallery on Friday. The press release mentions in addition to painting, the show will include a “top secret project” involving “almost 200 Juggalettes from around the world.”

The show opens at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 at the Start Gallery, 206 E. Grand River Ave., Detroit. Runs until Dec. 19.
